In August 2023, Nairobi County rolled out the Dishi na County programme, featured in Maarifa’s story “Feeding the Future: Dishi na County Initiative in Nairobi’s Public Primary Schools.” What started as a hopeful initiative quickly reshaped the city’s approach to child nutrition and education.
What began as a promise that no child in Nairobi’s schools would learn hungry now feeds 316,000 learners daily across all 17 Sub-Counties. The programme has served over 50 million meals, increased school enrolment and attendance by 40%, and restored hope to thousands of families.
In October 2025, this homegrown initiative stepped onto the global stage. At the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact (MUFPP) Forum, Dishi na County received a special mention in the Social and Economic Equity category, an honour highlighting Nairobi’s leadership in building inclusive and resilient urban food systems.
From Nairobi to Milan, Dishi na County is proving that when a County chooses to invest in its children, the world takes notice.
